When a friend asked Megan Collins, an account manager in the advertising industry at the time, to write a column on his website, it didn’t take much convincing.
As Megan recalls, “He had started a company making made-to-measure suits and asked me if I’d like to write about what women like to see guys wearing. I said ‘yes,’ because that came very easy to me.”
That column was life-changing as it resonated with people around the world. In just under a year, it was syndicated by a national newspaper chain, and Megan and her friend agreed it was best to move the content to its own platform.
From this early success, Style Girlfriend was born.
Style Girlfriend offers guys an inside look at what women want in a man — from how he dresses to how he acts.
Style Girlfriend offers guys an inside look at what women want in a man — from how he dresses to how he acts. Some men have a woman who tags along with them to the mall. Others have a style girlfriend.
It started as a content-only platform that generated all of its revenue from affiliate programs. Megan, who categorizes herself as a non-technical founder, needed a platform that was simple to work with but had the power to build out her vision. Starting on Tumblr, she quickly realized that she needed more control over things like search engine optimization. With its content-centric roots, WordPress just made sense.
In the beginning, the new site only used WooCommerce to display recommended products. But, in 2020, Megan added two service offerings for guys looking to eliminate the guesswork and instantly up their game with a personalized style consultation and shopping plan.
It was clear that Style Girlfriend needed full eCommerce functionality.
“We looked at Shopify, but I didn’t want to start Scotch taping too much together. With WooCommerce, we’ve been able to easily extend our offerings.”
“We looked at Shopify,” says Megan, “but I didn’t want to start Scotch taping too much together. I’d much rather have things all housed in one dashboard. I was trying to keep the tech simple for someone like me.
With WooCommerce, we’ve been able to easily extend our offerings. For example, we’re now using a plugin that allows our customers to purchase and redeem gift cards.”
Style Girlfriend is currently working on a pre-seed round of funding with an eye towards rapid expansion, with the help of WooCommerce, over the coming years.
